I have to admit that I’m a sucker for good single malts and free shipping. So, when I ordered the Westward American Single Malt Pinot Noir Cask, I naturally had to get a second bottle, to take advantage of the free shipping (a win-win). Wow! Am I glad I did. This cask strength single malt will warm your tummy. At 62.5% ABV, it reminds me of the Aberlour A’bunadh – orange peel, dried fruits, cinnamon… oily and heavy (not a summertime dram, but worth turning-down the thermostat and enjoying – a thunderstorm just rolled-in, which helps the atmosphere). I don’t get much brown sugar on the nose, but I sure get it on the palate – loads of dark brown sugar and molasses – like drinking a pecan pie without the pecans. I never thought I would say this, but it does have a herbaceous tobacco flavor – not smoke or burning tobacco, just raw tobacco – like my grandfather rolled so many years ago. I’m not sure I know what lingonberries taste like, but there is some type of berry flavor that I can’t nail down. Cocoa powder and nougat come through on the finish…long and slow. As I said before, watchout Scotland, America is distilling/aging some masterpieces. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
