Port Charlotte SBHP Scottish Barley Heavily Peated Single Malt Scotch 750ml
Peated to 40 phenol ppm, this whisky was crafted by a master distiller with over five decades of experience using 100% Scottish Barley that matures in the lochside village of Port Charlotte before being bottled at the Bruichladdich distillery using Islay spring water. Barley is the first heavily-peated single malt distilled using islay-grown barley. The Atlantic air passes through the American Oak casks as they mature by the shores of Loch Indaal, anchoring the spirit with maritime flavors. Port Charlotte has an aroma of bluebells, papaya, peat-dried barley, and smoky sea breeze. The palate tastes of dried peat, caramelized wood sugars, leading to a lemon-pepper finish. Bruichladdich Distillery is a distillery on the Rhinns of the isle of Islay in Scotland. The distillery produces mainly single malt Scotch whisky, but has also offered artisanal gin. It is owned by Rémy Cointreau and is one of eight working distilleries on the island.

About the brand
From the shores of the famous whisky producing island of Islay, Bruichladdich is celebrated for producing some of the best spirit in Scotland. Using the distillery’s tall, narrow-necked stills to produce an elegant, floral and fruity house style, the Bruichladdich distillery delivers a wide range of cask-finished whiskies, many of which are non-traditional for whisky ageing, such as casks which used to hold Cognac, Jurançon and Pinot Gris. The distillery produces three peated single malts: Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore, along with The Botanist gin. They mature and bottle all their spirit on the island, using only Scottish-produced barley and retaining Victorian-era equipment, including the only open-topped mash tun on Islay and the last remaining belt-driven mill in Scotland. Originally launched in 1881, Bruichladdich’s first notable owner was one William Harvey, who assumed control not long after the distillery was built and retained ownership until his passing in the 1930s. At this time, the distillery’s spirit was used primarily for blending. The next 60 years brought a variety of owners, including whisky brokers Ross and Coulter in the 1950s and AB Grant in the 1960s. Following this, the purchase of the site by Invergordon distillers (later to be purchased by Whyte & Mackay) brought great stability to the distillery, up until their sale of the company to Murray McDavid in 2000 for a lofty £6.5m. The new owners, steered by Mark Reynier and master distiller Jim McEwan (a former employee of Bowmore), transformed the distillery’s personality and fortune with their unique and innovative bottlings and style of packaging, many of which have gained worldwide recognition. Indeed, such was its success that it drew the attention of Rémy Cointreau, which bought the company in 2012 for £58m on the condition that it carried on with the same approach.. The result of the recent innovations is a range of silky peated malts with notes of oak. Truly an anytime whisky for fans of rich malted drams. This is definitely one for your spirit collections.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Opening with assertive waves of peat smoke and Atlantic squall, the olfactory system is on high alert in anticipation of some major sensory excitement. A swell of aromatics flood the senses with notes of iodine, salty canvas, crushed sea shells, charred oak staves, black pepper, paprika and leather tobacco pouches. The second wave brings vanilla, figs and soft plump dates, marinated pear, freshly milled malt, dark sweet toffee and cracked walnuts. It’s smoky. It’s smouldering. It’s sensuous. Just close your eyes and inhale long and deep. This is aromatic awesomeness.
Taste
Waves of the sweetest, smoothest, warmest smokiest spirit that you have ever experienced flood onto the palate like the atlantic surf on Saligo Bay. It is potent, focused and the flavours explode brilliantly onto the palate. Full of depth and complexity, the smokey sweetness of the barley contrasts beautifully with the marine freshness of the spirit and the richness of toffee and vanilla. The complexity is enhanced further with a citrus twist and then mellow oak tempers the fire. Once the taste buds adjust to what is happening, they rejoice in the company and pleasure of this young Celt.
Finish
It’s long and heart-warming, arousing feelings of pride and passion. It brings courage and strength, honesty and faith to your very soul.
