Eleuthera Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml
Rich, smoky-peaty, yet beguilingly drinkable vatted malt whisky. For people who love the taste of smoky and peaty whiskies. 'Eleuthera' gives you something new in this oeuvre. A very rare early bottling of the discontinued Compass Box Eleuthera from back when you could still call this a Vatted Malt. Compass Box Eleuthera, a now discontinued release, is a wonderful, smoky blend of malt whiskies. Typically it combined 15 year-old malt whisky from the village of Brora, aged in re-charred hogsheads. Also 12 year-old malt from the village of Port Askaig, Islay. Eleuthera the very first vatted malt released by Compass Box Whisky Company. While as of 22nd of November 2011 whiskies could no longer be labelled as Vatted Malts. Instead they had to name it Blended Malt Whisky. Jim Murray said of the first release: “Quite simply, one of the most complex and truly magnificent vatted malts of all time. A collector’s piece.” Sadly, when the 15 year-old malt from Brora became un-available aged in re-charred casks. Compass Box decided to retire “Eleuthera” rather than overhaul the recipe.

About the brand
In 1967, Canada was celebrating its centennial, magnificent Great Lakes ships were being built and launched in Collingwood Harbour, and an American bourbon distiller decided that Collingwood would be the perfect place to build a new distillery for the production of Canadian whisky. The distillery was purchased in 1971 by Brown-Forman, makers of famous Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. Brown-Forman’s successful Canadian Mist Whisky brand has been produced in Collingwood ever since. Many years later in 2011, under the skilled craftsmanship of Brown-Forman Master Distiller Chris Morris, the Collingwood distillery launched a new premium artisanal brand, Collingwood Whisky, for the Canadian, US and international markets. Like the town where it’s made, Collingwood Whisky is no ordinary spirit. Distilled using pristine filtered water from Georgian Bay and grains (corn, rye and barley) sourced mainly from Ontario farms, it is aged in high-quality oak barrels hand-made in Brown-Forman’s own cooperage. Once the whisky is perfectly matured, it is rested with toasted maplewood “staves”, which imparts a maple character that is truly Canadian, yet unique among Canadian whiskies. “Collingwood Whisky is inspired by the iconic heritage and natural resources of Southern Georgian Bay,” says David Dobbin, AVP and General Manager of Canadian Mist Distillers. “At the heart of the brand are locally-sourced ingredients and the craftsmanship of our dedicated people, who are all local residents. What stands out about this whisky is that it’s incredibly smooth with no harshness. Full-flavoured and complex with a long, clean finish, you can sip it neat, on the rocks or in classic lighter cocktails, and its characteristics are perfect for a variety of food recipes.” As Collingwood Whisky was quickly gaining rave reviews and loyal drinkers, the distillery’s manager made a remarkable discovery in 2013 – fifty barrels of 100% rye whisky aging on the premises since the early 1990s. The vintage, bottled and named Collingwood 21 Year Old Rye Canadian Whisky, garnered top honours, winning the Canadian Whisky of the Year and Connoisseur of the Year categories at the Canadian Whisky Awards in 2015. Inspired by the success of this vintage, Brown-Forman decided to explore concepts for limited runs of interesting new whiskies. In 2017, the distillery launched the first release of its limited edition Town Collection – Double Barreled Whisky. Unlike most Canadian whiskies, which are blends of several varieties, Double Barreled is made from only one type of whisky, which is first matured in white oak barrels, then decanted and finished in heavily-toasted, lightly charred new oak barrels for further maturation. Finally, Double Barreled rests in stainless steel marrying vats with toasted maplewood staves. “There’s something noticeably different about Double Barreled,” notes David Dobbin. “The extended maturation process results in exciting new tasting notes – dry cinnamon spice, toasted oak and lightly dried orchard fruits, imparting a smooth, warm finish with a flavour that is both smooth and complex.” The judges agree. At the 2018 Canadian Whisky Awards in Victoria, BC, a panel of eight international whisky experts awarded Collingwood Whisky Town Collection Double Barreled both a Gold Medal and Sippin’ Whisky of the Year. The distillery’s Collingwood Whisky was honoured with a Bronze Medal, as was Canadian Mist, which also won the Whisky Value of the Year – Export category. A long-time supporter of its home town, Collingwood Whisky has worked closely with the Save Our Lighthouse campaign, encouraging buyers of its Double Barrelled Whisky to donate and contributing a substantial sum of money to the restoration of the Nottawasaga Lighthouse, which was damaged by lightning in 2004. To promote Collingwood’s whisky roots, the distiller inspired the idea of “Whiskylicious”, working with the Downtown Collingwood BIA and the Town of Collingwood, and generously supporting the event to make it an annual success. As you journey forth during Whiskylicious, taking in the festivities, sampling one-of-a-kind taste sensations and sipping unique Collingwood Whisky cocktail creations at participating restaurants and specialty food shops, remember to raise a glass to Collingwood’s rich whisky heritage. Honour the pursuit. Sip responsibly.

Nose: A new and full fragrance of fresh peat-stink. Some lemon oil and bacon consumed matchsticks and ash. Briny notes are available yet it's not ocean salt progressively like olives or lemon cuts protected in brackish water. There's a dash of kelp/iodine and a slight hard mineral note. It's a propping and strengthening nose similar to an early morning stroll along a precipice way on the Scottish coast with the fragrance of wildflowers on the breeze. Subsequent to resting for some time it bloomed and smells of tropical foods grown from the ground nectar flickered through the peat. The dry-glass smell is sugary residue and ash. Sense of taste: The appearance is magnificent and multi-layered. Semi-sweet new with complex advancing smoky notes and a warm zesty/home grown touch (nutmeg and sweet cinnamon especially). The Clynelish part obviously sparkles on the sense of taste as it blasts through the cover of Caol Ila smoke. In mid-sense of taste increasingly smoky notes show up this time with a substantial quality - bacon smoked cod smoked roe - anyway it generally holds a noble and rich character. There are likewise some dazzling sweet tropical products of the soil in the wax brush that develop later and these sweet notes become progressively unmistakable as the whisky opens. The surface is rich plush smooth and somewhat sleek. Finish: Long. Marginally mineral and vegetal however in every case carefully smoky. There is a sweet waxy and smoky trailing sensation that is very lovely and waits for a very long time along with a minuscule dash of salt. Eleuthera gets from the old Greek word for opportunity" and it was an adept name to give this originally mixed malt created by Compass Box. It was discharged from 2001-2003 and contained multi year-old Clynelish wedded to multi year old Caol Ila. John Glaser plainly realized he was onto something uncommon with this formula as both of these refineries have highlighted in his later mixes. At the point when supplies of the essential old Clynelish segment evaporated this astounding whisky was resigned yet later restored in intermediary by means of "The Lost Mix" packaging which was a tribute to this whisky. The two are not accurately the equivalent yet comparable. The nose is a lot of a Caol Ila smell regardless - suggestive of the authority packaging of Caol Ila multi year old. It was tight when originally opened in the wake of having been secured in the jug for such a long time and it required an hour to unwind. Anyway it was still amazingly great right from the beginning and simply kept on improving with time. As it refreshed and opened it turned out to be progressively better and greater fruity with the more keen lemon notes overwhelming as the Clynelish character ruled the Caol Ila. The sense of taste is a perfect work of art of exactness mixing - John Glaser was marking a great deal on his first discharge and needed to make a big deal about a sprinkle and he prevailing past anybody's desires - most likely even his own. This is a scrumptious sense of taste that unfurls in waves and layers much the way a mature age explanation whisky does introducing moving tides of flavor after some time. The sense of taste streams easily into the completion which is of extensive length body and artfulness. Try not to include water - this is flawless slick. I was fortunate to discover this container at a little autonomous alcohol shop a long while prior however it is currently uncommon costly and more likely than not just accessible through closeout. In any case on the off chance that you can find a container at a value you consider sensible I'd propose getting it as it is a bit of history and more than worth a taste. Tasting Notes
Nose
The nose on this is just fantastic and while the Lost Blend isn't the exact same, it is pretty similar.
Taste
Much less peaty on the palate than the nose. It’s more like brined honey chews with more lovely herbal notes.
Finish
Salty and smokey before settling to slow, long honey and herb mix.
