Cask-strength whiskey means you get the spirit in its purest form. Since it hasn’t been watered down by the distillers at bottling, you can customize every pour to suit tastes. If you prefer a dram on steroids, add little or no water. If you prefer to stay on two feet for the evening, then you can bring things closer to a regular bottling strength of around 40-43%.
Either way, it’s up to you to decide.
While most of us aren’t necessarily looking for the cheapest whiskeys, we are looking for good value. That may be winning an auction below market rate for a bottle of or finding a case deal on some .
Cask-strength whiskies have more spirit (and less water) in the same size vessel as the diluted stuff. With original-proof whiskey, you are often getting more for your money—especially if you like to add a substantial amount of water to your glass!
At this point, you might be thinking, what’s the point of drinking non-cask strength whiskey anymore?
Well, the devil’s advocate in this conversation would point out that the dilution process at bottling is part of traditional whisky making. By removing this essential step, you are creating a new type of product that is different from proud spirits like American bourbon and Canadian rye.
Now that the whiskey devil has your ear, they add that the master blenders are diluting the to bottlings and give them a better balance. Adding water helps flavors and aromas shine through as intended.
Lastly, when you add your own water, you are adding all sorts of trace minerals and ions that can alter the perceived taste of a whiskey. (That is unless you can access the same water as the distillery). Even if you opt for deionized water, you will be altering the water chemistry.
Keeping all those points in mind we have a simple solution to the cask strength versus bottling strength argument: buy and drink both types of whisky!
We can discuss cask strength whisky without talking about Stagg Jr. As you may know, every batch of George T. Stagg’s younger brother is made from a combination of bourbons aged around 8-9 years. Every batch is unique but lives up to the Stagg legend and is bottled in the ballpark of 130 proof.
Part of Beam Suntory, Booker’s is no newcomer to the world of cask strength bourbons and rye whiskies. Every limited release is made uncut, unfiltered, and blended from a hand-selected barrel.
The Lumberyard Batch is made up of bourbon aged just over 7 years and packed with cinnamon, vanilla, honey, and plenty of spice (13% rye in the mash bill). This barrel strength offering from Booker's soars above many other batches and weighs in at 124.8 proof.
Michter’s dabbles in the realm of high-proof whiskey but usually tends towards balance. This limited-release rye is based on an undisclosed grain bill but is full of hot cinnamon spice and rich vanilla.
The rye whiskey enters the casks at 103 proof. Thanks to the magic of Michter’s aging environment, the final product is bottled at 110.4 proof (55.2% ABV).

When first launched their uncut and unfiltered in 2013, only 600 bottles were released. After a brief hiatus, Cowboy Bourbon became an annual fan-favorite containing the best and rarest whiskey produced at the Texas distillery.

This limited edition release from the Lawrenceburg distillery drips out at only a few thousand bottles per year. The 2023 edition is a blend of carefully selected 9,12,14 and 15-year-old bourbons.

The name represents the very rarest from Lux Row Distillers. Each “Pact” is a moment captured in time—whiskey never to be seen again. The undertaking of one man, each whisky is constructed from sourcing unknown whiskeys—the identities will be taken to the grave!
Blood Oath Pact No. 9 is a blend of three whiskies. The first two are an “oaky” 16-year-old and a “luscious” 12-year-old whisky adding brown sugar, leather, vanilla, and anise notes. For a moreish balance, a third and final whiskey was added. This keystone of the blend was finished in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks adding dark fruit and molasses.
Keep an eye out for Blood Oath in 2023. You won’t be disappointed.
Few distilleries have elevated modern rye whiskey like that of Utah’s first distillery since the 1870s. Combining the new with the old, has built a reputation for beautiful rye that will make you cry (tears of joy or tears or tears of regret for not buying enough bottles).
High West A Midwinter Night’s Dram is based on the distillery’s flagship Rendezvous Rye. What levels up this already excellent whiskey is time spent in French Oak and ex-Port Cask. The end result is a rich and luxurious rye full of fortified-wine notes.
Shakespeare was a lover of puns. If he were alive today, we are sure he would love A Midwinter Night’s Dram as much as we do. Find out for yourself when A Midwinter Night’s Dram hits shelves sometime towards the end of the year.
Released in honor of its founder George Garvin Brown, Birthday Bourbon is a limited pour few get to try. Each annual release is built on a blend of whiskies aged at least 12 years in oak. The master distiller picks out the best from a lineup of small-batch bourbons.
The end result is panic and disappointment as whisky enthusiasts fight over who gets a bottle. While there are subtle differences with each release, you can expect a complex amber dram full of dark fruit, baking spices, and the slightest hint of smoke.

The next one on this list is extra special. That’s because 10 Year Bourbon hasn’t been released since 2021. After more than a gap year, we expect finding this whiskey to be mission impossible for most people (but you’re more determined than most people).
The 2023 release of this premium small-batch bourbon is a blend of whiskey matured in hand-selected barrels by both Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson and Master Distiller Dan McKee.
Every drop bestowed upon us from MIchter’s is liquid gold and 10 Year is their modus operandi. If you find this whiskey in the wild, get out your plastic and don’t look back.
Bruichladdich has evolved its reputation from “non-peaty” and “fake-islay” to releasing some of the most coveted single malt scotches yearly. One of these highly-limited brands is aptly named Bruichladdich Black Art.
We think the denoted color (or lack thereof) refers to the shroud of secrecy for each Black Art release. Outside of the few involved, no one else at the distillery understands the alchemy behind each whisky.
The second release is the much-beloved Octamore. Several unique versions of the “super-heavily peated” whisky escape the distillery in tiny numbers each year. Each one is bottled at eye-watering cask strengths with legendary levels of peat.
If you can grab a year’s worth of Octamore and catch the Black Art then you’ve already won.
Ardbeg Day is unlike anything else. Held on the last Saturday of May, Ardbeg lovers everywhere celebrate by attending local events or attempting to procure some rare Islay whisky. The main celebrations take place at the distillery and include tours, live events, and special tastings.
For the 2023 edition, the distillers have removed the purifier connected to Ardbeg still. The 2023 Ardbeg Day release, Heavy Vapours, is described by the distillery as “the most full-blown Ardbeg ever” with “pungeant earthiness, dark chocolate, and sharp peppermint.”
Heavy Vapours will be non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV and 50.2% ABV. The latter of which will be the hard-to-get Committee Release that can only be bought directly at the distillery.

The series was launched in 2017 to mark the opening of The Macallan’s new distillery. Each Folio release comes with bespoke packaging that appears to be a hardback book. It will fit perfectly in any collection—the liquid in the bottle isn't’ half-bad either!

The word translates as “blue.” Multinational brewing and distilling giant Suntory was inspired by this color when they came up with the concept of World Whisky Ao. Drawing inspiration from the great blue that covers the earth, they wanted to create blended whisky that stood for the unlimited potential of the planet.
A novel idea, the distillery crafted a blend that includes whiskies from the U.S., Canada, Ireland, Scotland, and Japan. Each component adds its personality to the final product. The result is a complex, stupidly-drinkable blend that makes that other “blue” stuff seem like the light version.
While previously only available in Japan, Ao is set to be available in the US and Canada this year. Get it before it’s gone!

With so many new and exciting whiskeys being released each month, often it’s difficult to drown out the noise and identify which bottles are worth pursuing. Here, we’ve tried to narrow it down for you with a handpicked selection of bourbon and single malt scotch that we’re most excited about in 2022 (and very keen to get our hands on!)
What will become of 18? A full rebrand? Slight tweaks? It’s anyone’s guess at the moment as to what Stagg ‘Jr’ Batch 18 will look like, but we can say with confidence that whatever the release is named and however it is presented, it will do well to keep the same quality, consistency and punchiness that the brand became synonymous with from Batch 17 and below.
It makes sense that Sazerac feel the need to jettison the ‘Jr’ labelling associated with Stagg, particularly given this silo’s big energetic proof and bold flavor profile. Naming a bourbon of this caliber and quality 'junior' is counterproductive and rather misleading. In reality, there is nothing junior about Stagg Jr Batch 1 through 17, so Stagg 18 is a logical step and will no doubt have an even bigger impact on the appetite and demand for the line.
Some may think it a happy coincidence that there will be no release in this year’s BTAC and a new, rebranded Stagg Batch 18 is planned to take its place, but we think it’s rather noble of Buffalo Trace Distillery to place such high-quality benchmarks and standards on its flagship limited-edition collection - at the end of the day, you would rather wait for the 2023 GTS than receive a subpar 2022 George T Stagg…

The Macallan Intense Arabica extends on the , with the same eco-conscious ethos as the inaugural release. The Harmony Collection appears to represent the Speyside powerhouse’s adoption of a more sustainable and ethical approach, with innovative techniques and natural materials becoming the primary focus of this series.
The whisky itself is believed to have been aged in European and American sherry seasoned oak casks, and bottled at 88 proof or 44% ABV, the same concentration at which the Rich Cacao was bottled - a nice piece of consistency. In keeping with the theme set by the Rich Cacao, Intense Arabica is a collaboration with another one of the world’s foremost masters in the world of coffee, and as such, the profile will reflect a rich, intense espresso flavor.
Demand is swarming for the Harmony Collection with many predicting that this range has the same potential trajectory as the Editions, with the Edition 1 and 2 now worth a very pretty penny at auction. Never before has Blanton's released a 'finished' spirit, with its variations always previously based on age and proof. The 2021 Honey Barrel Blanton's will break this mould and is interestingly a nod to Colonel Blanton’s use of Honey Barrels at the brand’s early inception. Buffalo Trace still sells honey directly from the Distillery, and the Honey Barrel Finish will likely be beset with a remarkably sweet, honey inspired profile and a lush, viscous mouthfeel.

114 Proof. Beset with a label that features an old man. A unique, rye heavy mashbill. After mingling for two months, 13-year-old barrels with dominant fruit flavors were layered in. The resulting bourbon is peppery and intriguing on the nose, and sweet and long on the finish.
