Buffalo Trace began their Single Oak Project to highlight the truly unique and innovative realm of whiskey making. Starting with 96 hand-selected American oak trees yielding 192 tree sections with varying age rings, each section was formed into a single barrel. From here, these individualized barrels were charred differently and each added its own characteristic flavor and tone to the whiskey within. With a total of 1,396 taste combinations, SOP is a true exploration of flavor! SOP Barrel #102 is composed of level 6 seasoning with #3 char, a wheated mash bill and has a finished barrel strength of 125% proof. This could be any rack bourbon, but it’s classy and refined — a darker, woodier, coal-fired, more cigars-in-the-back-room bourbon than most of the comparably fruity expressions you get in the SOP.
