12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml
Bowmore 12yrs has a place in many hearts as Islay's 'medium-peated' malt.A deserved runner-up in our Whisky of the Year 2014-15 blind tasting. Bowmore offers impressive quality at an affordable price. This is vatted together from both ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks and has a lovely balance between the Islay smokiness and some floral, fruit and spice flavours. Loch Indaal is not a lake, it is a large bay carved into the west coast of the island of Islay. Bowmore sits on the southern shore of that Bay, directly across from Bruichladdich in the north. The Distillery is in Bowmore the town, which is the capital of the island district.

About the brand
Bowmore Single Malt whisky was officially established in 1779 by local merchant John Simson, making it one of the first distilleries on Islay to ever receive license to legally produce whisky. As with many other Scottish distilleries, it’s likely that Simson had been distilling on the grounds for a number of years before that – probably since his arrival in 1766. The Bowmore distillery which lies on the South Eastern shore of Loch Indaal, is owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd, which is part of the Japanese Suntory portfolio. As an Islay distillery, Bowmore’s whisky is peated and holds the unmistakable characteristics of an Islay Malt. However, its notes lean more towards smoke and sweeter sugars rather than of peat and seaweed. Despite its location on the banks of Loch Indaal in central Islay, Bowmore’s water comes from the river Laggan, where it flows after completing a 19-kilometer journey starting in limestone and sandstone hills on the east coast, and then picking up heather from the hills and peat in the Islay bogs. Such water produces a light and subtle whisky with a good balance of mineral and vegetal. After its opening in 1779, it wasn’t long before Simson passed the ownership of Bowmore to the Mutter family in 1837, who held onto ownership of the flourishing distillery until 1892. The Mutters were originally ‘scientific’ farmers whose focus was improving cultivation on the island. As a result they are reported to have improved the distillery, honing distilling practices and the flow of necessary elements to the site. The distillery was then bought from the Mutter family in 1925 by J.B. Sheriff & Co. and remained under their ownership until being purchased by Inverness-based William Grigor & Son, Ltd. in 1950. Although Morrison substantially rebuilt and renovated much of the distillery, he retained the original floor maltings and traditional whisky production methods which are still in use to this day. Winner of a whole host of awards, Bowmore has been named Distillery of the Year multiple times, and various expressions have also been recognized with Double Gold Awards at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

This is a pleasant bourbon especially thinking about the cost. To me this is Lagavulin 16's younger sibling - more youthful not exactly as created and less peaty however a similar sort of full smooth intense profile.

It's Islay so there is a peatiness however a pleasant gentle ammount of peat that energetically taps the peat to yer bed. ...Peat... Its smooth with carmel and calfskin and a toasted nut weak that was left in the stove excessively long. Consumed. Consumed nut fragile that is presently a bit severe. Were you eating nut weak you'd heel however for scotch its really a quite welcoming little note. Like being somewhere down in the forested areas and finding an old plaster n wood tudor bungalow that has been deserted for a long time. Open that entryway and take a musky whiff. That is Bowmore. Like being shipped to old world scotland with an indication if Hansell and Gretel.

My first peated scotch (genuinely new to this) exploring from memory so Im sure theres a couple of flavors I missed. First thing that leaps out is a medium grill smoke. Close by that is a green and light nectar pleasantness which helps me to remember a German ale. This isnt a firmly enhanced scotch yet its more prominent than the whole of its parts and a truly encouraging beverage once you get accustomed to the smoke.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Coastal smoke and ash soon make way for bergamot, orange zest, lemon slices and some hay before becoming rather floral, heather smoke now competing with the ash.
Taste
Lovely and rounded, honeyed even, initially. Vanilla, perfumed smoke and coastal elements develop. Dark Peat. Blossom, oily sweetness.
Finish
Smoky and long. Sea spray, dry grass, a touch of ash and citrus.
