The Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky 750ml
The 1996 vintage of Glenkinchie's Distillers Edition range - This single malt expression is finished in Amontillado sherry casks to add more fruity flavours to the traditionally light spirit. After mellowing in a refill cask to develop the soft distillery character for a decade, a secondary maturation in a specifically chosen Amontillado cask wood ensures that all the good work continues. Amontillado [a-mon-tee-YA-doh] is a type of sherry wine that is delicate, dry, and nutty. Glenkinchie is located in the Lowland region of Scotland where today, only three distilleries remain. If you travel to Edinburgh, you might as well pay this distillery a visit as it is only 20 miles away.

About the brand
Glenkinchie lies, as the name might suggest, in a glen of the Kinchie Burn near the village of Pencaitland, East Lothian. It is situated about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The distillery is set in farmland. The name 'Kinchie' is a corruption of 'De Quincy', the original owners of the land. Its origins date back to around 1825 when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate, While there are no direct records it seems likely that Glenkinchie is the Milton Distillery previous recorded in the area. The brothers probably renamed it in about 1837. In 1853, the Rate Brothers were bankrupted and the site converted to a sawmill. In 1881, the plant was rebuilt and whisky-making restarted under Maj. James Grey. In 1969 the distillery stopped malting its own grain and the malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky. The Glenkinchie label was relatively little known until 1989, when United Distillers started marketing it under their Classic Malts brand.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Firmer, drier notes from soft vanilla to crisp grape. Sweeter, nuttier tones come from the malted barley and cask wood.
Taste
Dry, after early biscuit-sweetness. Enormous malt character contrasts with the fruitiness of the grape.
Finish
Very long, dry, oaky. Very faint peppery notes add spice, softened by very late caramel.
