Very Special Old Fitzgerald has always been a sentimental favorite of mine. Back in my days as archivist for United Distillers, this is one of the brands I helped develop for the Bourbon Heritage Collection. The brand was sold to Heaven Hill in the late 1990s but they have done a good job keeping the flavor profile close to the original release. Old Fitzgerald Bourbons have always had a reputation as excellent whiskeys. It was the flagship brand at Stitzel-Weller Distillery and was made with wheat instead of rye as the flavoring grain. Acquired by Pappy Van Winkle post Prohibition, who introduced the famous 'whisper of wheat' substituting wheat for the more traditional rye in the grain recipe, Old Fitzgerald built itself on a more well-rounded, softer profile than its competitors, an edge that it still possesses today. Having passed hands to Diageo, then Bernheim and now with Heaven Hill in Louisville, Old Fitzgerald continues to produce stunning age-stated wheat bourbons that will dance on the palate and delight your tastebuds.
