Madeira Cask Finish 10 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey 750ml
The Tyrconnell 15 Year Old Madeira Finish builds on the high reputation of it's sister bottling at 10 years old which is a firm favourite amongst the Kilbeggan Distillery portfolio. This new expression has raised the bar even higher and delivers a polished and rich flavour experience. We expect this single malt to be hugely popular amongst our customers and we only hope that the distillery has enough of it to go around! Released in March 2018, this limited edition single malt bottling was aged for 15 years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels. It then finished its maturation in former Madeira wine casks, a fortified wine produced off the coast of Portugal on the Madeira Islands. This single malt is double-distilled rather than triple-distilled as is more traditional in Irish whiskey production. Bottled at 46% ABV, it will be released in select US markets as well as Belgium, Ireland, Denmark, Germany and Global Travel Retail.

About the brand
The Tyrconnell is a historic brand of whiskey that has been revived by the Cooley Distillery (which is now part of Beam Suntory). The brand was previously owned by the Watt Distillery, which (according to the company) dates back to 1762. The Tyrconnell was their flagship brand, and was named after a racehorse owned by Andrew Alexander Watt. The horse was a chestnut colt that won at 100 to 1 odds in 1876 in the Irish horse race called The National Produce Stakes. A horse race is depicted on the label.

Tonight’s dram takes me (virtually) back to Ireland. I’ve had a few drams from Tyrconnell, and tonight, I’m sipping the Double Cask. It opens with apples, pears, and honeycomb, followed by malty vanilla and a squeeze of lemon, then the lemon turns to bitter lemon rind, joined by black pepper and spicy ginger, and a reappearance of ripe pears to balance the bitter/sweet. The oily mouthfeel and thin, but clingy legs, deliver a medium finish that brings-out all the flavors, plus some grapefruit and burnt toffee. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
