Cuixe Mezcal 750ml
El Jolgorio Cuixe is made with wild agave Cuishe (Cuixe). Like its relatives agave Madrecuishe and Barril, this agave grows in a cylindrical, stalk-shaped piña, with leaves spreading at the top. It is often slightly smaller than Madrecuishe, but more dense. This Mezcal has an earthy scent, like wet clay. The taste is spicy with subtle hints of smooth smoke. El Jolgorio translates to “the revelry”. Jolgorios are small festivals that occur in remote, mountain villages throughout Oaxaca, Mexico. They celebrate births, deaths, weddings and Saint’s days. For centuries, the lifeblood of these celebrations has been traditional mezcal. In 2010, the Cortés family began building a collective of top mezcal distillers from around Oaxaca. As of 2019, El Jolgorio represents sixteen different families, working in ten different regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, each with its own special story. Every bottle is hand-marked with the specific details of each batch, to truly connect the drinker with the family behind the expression. In 2017, the team behind the brand realized that certain varieties of agave would be extremely limited and they would only be able to make them available once per year (if at all). They began packaging these rare editions in black bottles to set them apart from the other releases.

Version: 13 Gather 2016 47%ABV Ignacio Parada Scents of ashtray and acetone with some inconspicuous simmered vegetables attempting to jab through yet continues being overwhelmed by liquor exhaust. Taste is a little better with natural vegetable notes unobtrusive tropical organic products and earth like minerality yet then the completion slaughters it once more. It's suggestive of menthol cigarettes alongside a cruel sharpness. This is by a long shot the most exceedingly awful EJ bottle that I have had at this point. For the cash I set down for it I trust it shows signs of improvement with time however that implies I need to drink it to get to that point.

Home grown start to finish. Somewhat smokey and out there. This Mezcal appears to be somewhat disconnected because of the utilization of Karwinskis Agave that gives it this unmistakable taste and differentiations. A ton of affection from me towards this Mezcal and the Cortes family.

Daintily natural with traces of mud. Light smoke. I have not had a great deal of the better mezcals yet this one is the best I have had up until now. Light and fragile.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Nose is initially of pine nuts, a bit floral, very mineral, with notes of roasted agave poking though but becoming more apparent with more air time.
Taste
The taste is extremely mineral with flashes of baking chocolate and very slightly minty.
Finish
Finishes with more mineral, wet cement, and dirt/soil which fades into a long dusty finish not unlike an old book.
