About the brand
More than 125 years after the doors to his distillery were first opened, his whiskies are still heralded as the most remarkable spirits for the most remarkable people. Magnus’ story begins all the way back in the young, war-torn America of the middle nineteenth century. In the midst of the Civil War in 1864, young Magnus received news that his father had been killed in battle. With three younger siblings to take care of, he matured quickly and took on the responsibility of caring for his siblings. His late father had been a merchant, and Magnus took after him to become a savvy businessman. He soon discovered a niche market for wholesale liquors, and by the time he was twenty-six he had painstakingly built up a liquor empire based out of Cincinnati, Ohio. Magnus prided himself not only on the quality and age of his spirits, but on intelligent and honorable business methods. Excellent whiskey, he recognized, was more than simply a pleasant experience for the drinker – it was a means of promoting good conversation, close fellowship, and “the interchange of kindly deeds and pleasant thoughts.” The drinkers of Murray Hill Club Whiskey were, in accordance with Joseph’s vision, people of discriminating taste and mature judgement. Joseph actively introduced his whiskey into the leading bars, hotels, cafes, and groceries of his day. Local newspapers were peppered with advertisements for this new whiskey, which quickly earned great acclaim. He encouraged readers to sample just a taste, for “give this whiskey a trial once, and you’ll take no other brand.”

Brutal waiting ethanol in advance. Dainty and unremarkable. Im astonished the audits are as high as they seem to be. Another NDP over-publicity @ $100/bottle.

Tastes like mint and furniture clean. Try not to purchase a container without attempting it first.

This is in the sherry-finish division of my completed whiskey section. It was Joseph Magnus versus Respectable Oak champ to conflict with Wild Turkey Recovery. In a visually impaired trial Joseph Magnus won. As usual... this is for science. Dazzle was somewhat unimaginable. Despite the fact that cost doesnt consistently mean better $90 versus $30 was significant here. I wasnt tricked for a second. Nose contains sugar and caramel. Helps me a ton to remember barrel quality whiskeys. Body is the place the sherry impact kicks in. Theres a touch of sugar and cowhide in there and the vibe is overwhelmingly dry. On the completion raisin and cinnamon take away with low warmth. The dryness from the sherry shortens the flavors perceptibly. On esteem: wouldnt purchase once more. Its great its a pleasant encounter and its brimming with flavor. Just not a recurrent purchase. UPDATE: Joseph Magnus lost to WT Restoration in a visually impaired trial. WT now to conflict with the victor of the port wine finish section TBD. This versus was absurdly close. I really favored the body of this person to the Recovery. By the day's end my decision came down to perfection and Wild Turkey won large there. Joseph Magnus appears to be ruled by sherry where Wild Turkey Recovery by examination appears to be just impacted by it. To me that makes the Joseph Magnus a decent beverage and the Recovery an extraordinary one.

Tasting Notes
Nose
Cask finishing dominates…fermented grapes, dark chocolate, stewed pears. More familiar bourbon notes of caramel, almonds, and a little clove can be found beneath the other aromas.
Taste
Caramel, vanilla, and nutmeg. Unfortunately, that is quickly replaced with (in my opinion) a rather heavy-handed finishing. The fermented grapes return with the dark chocolate and sour raisins.
Finish
It is here that the bourbon flavors finally assert themselves…vanilla, caramel, cherries, nutmeg, and oranges that linger for a few minutes.
