Barrell Craft Spirits has released its first Single Barrel Rye and this one clocks in at at least 13 years old and 126.96 proof. This Rye Whiskey was distilled in Canada and matured in a single cask. It was moved to Kentucky for further maturation and chosed for its distinctive flavor, bouquet and texture. L940 126.96 Evidence. Scents like grass and cardboard. Sleek surface yet sense of taste appears to be slight. Tracks the nose. Possibly a trace of milk chocolate. Zest. In any case a downplayed sense of taste. Practically exhausting however not hostile. 12/6/19

Let me start by saying Im a tremendous Barrell fan. Their Whiskey Vast Barrel New Years and Dovetail involve a blessed spot on my rack. This SiB Rye is a swing and a miss however. A scorcher at 126+ proof yet deficient with regards to the profundity that would make you need to drink whatever solid with a completion I can just portray as medicinal. Still love ya Barrell...but this was a costly misstep for me.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Extremely herbal and floral: lilacs, fresh cut grass, sweet hay, cherry tree blossoms and spearmint. There’s also some light baking scents like cinnamon and light vanilla. The nose is sweet and fresh with very little ethanol burn.

Taste

bubblegum, herbal fennel and mint tea, rye spice, Red Hots candy that fade quickly and make way for a rye spice that warms more than it burns. Green apple skin, faint ginger and cherry licorice. Absolutely delicious.

Finish

green/sour apple jolly rancher for days. Very little rye spice heat on the back of the tongue. A refreshing mint and menthol cooling effect that lasts for a long while. The light and floral sweetness, like cherry infused sweet tea keeps the whole finish very enjoyable.
