18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml
Cardhu comes from one of the oldest of the Speyside distilleries, which have nestled in foothills near the River Spey for 200 years and the Cardhu range is an excellent representation of these Speyside whiskies. Known for its smooth, sweet-natured single malt whisky, the history of Cardhu's rise to fame is to a large part told in the story of two determined women who were members of the founding family. A well-aged Cardhu, this 18 year old Speyside single malt retains its characteristic gentle nature allied with greater complexity and richness.

About the brand
The distillery was established in 1824 by John Cumming, who had previously been a whisky smuggler. The distillery was sited high up on Mannoch Hill, above the River Spey due to the peat softening the water. The distillery started as farm distillery working on a seasonal basis after the harvest had been gathered. The distillery was mainly run by Helen Cumming who used to sell bottles of whisky to passers-by through the window of their farmhouse. Due to the hill the farm distillery was on, Helen could see the police coming and would throw flour on herself and say that she was baking bread to disguise the smell. She would then offer them tea and fly a flag outside so that the other nearby distilleries could see and take prompt action. In 1885 the distillery was rebuilt on a new piece of land but continued to stay in the hands of the Cummings, being run by Elizabeth Cumming, the daughter-in-law of John and Helen Cumming. The stills from the old distillery building were sold to William Grant who set up Glenfiddich distillery. The new building and stills meant that Cardhu could produce triple the amount of whisky it had previously produced. These higher production levels led to Johnnie Walker and Sons buying much of Cardhu's output to put into their increasingly popular blend. In 1893 Elizabeth Cumming sold the distillery to Johnnie Walker and Sons on the condition that the Cumming family could continue the day-to-day running of the distillery. Cardhu distillery kept working under these conditions until the onset of the Second World War when wartime restrictions meant that it was harder to use barley for distilling purposes. In 1960 the distillery's still-house, mash-house and tun-room were rebuilt, and in 1970 steam coils were introduced to heat the stills and the number of stills was increased to six. Spring water from Mannoch Hill started to be mixed with water from the local Lynne burn to supply the increased production of the distillery. The Malt Whisky Trail Map Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail is a tourism initiative featuring seven working Speyside distilleries including Cardhu, a historic distillery (Dallas Dhu, now a museum) and the Speyside Cooperage. According to a BBC article, "Cardhu is a Scotch that may taste familiar because it is used in Johnnie Walker’s blended whiskies".

A flavorful whisky with flower and nectar notes. The sense of taste has included notes of peppercorn and hazelnut while the completion is smooth and medium long. There isn't really any profundity or multifaceted nature here and from various perspectives it just avoids any and all risks however it's as yet tasty.

This was sent as a visually impaired tasting challenge by my engine city mate @Generously_Paul. He sent 5 examples. I speculated 3 right and named one decisively as Yamazaki Distiller ( the sandalwood fragrance parted with it). Im not an enormous devotee of Cardhu yet perhaps thats just me considering the whole district of Spain cherishes this as their preferred single malt. I overlook the notes at this point...was great yet not sufficient to purchase a jug. Adequate to have at a lodging bar. Much appreciated Paul !

I won this jug at sell off a couple of months back and concluded the time had come to open it. The Cardhu 18 is a UK selective that goes for around $75-80. My triumphant offer was about $60 after the conversion scale. Extra 10% charges in addition to transportation and Id state that I paid near UK retail. Lets see whats in the engine of this Speyside single malt. Packaged at 40% ABV is chill separated and has colorant included creation it a golden nectar shading. The nose has bunches of nectar some citrus and is malty. Tangerine preserves peaches grapes and some light apples. Dominatingly sherry notes however there additionally is by all accounts some whiskey development also. Earthy colored sugar caramel buttered toast. Espresso or mocha toffee maple. Nutty - Brazil nuts hazelnut nutmeg ginger and anise. Botanical verdant and perfumed green oak now and again. For a second there was an overly sweet/fruity note like Skittles or Fruity Stones. The sense of taste begins with oranges and tangerines and nectar. Very malty however to a greater extent a dull simmered malt much the same as that utilized in a bold brew. Vanilla cream anise butterscotch. Oak tannins dull chocolate salted caramels. Black out mint sherry yet to a greater extent a dim and delicious sherry as opposed to a sweet and fruity sherry. Green grapes and a delicate dash of wood smoke. Some wood flavor however its generally speaking a mellow and entirely drinkable whisky. A medium bodied mouthfeel that is velvety and delicately slick dry. The completion is medium length with dim chocolate malt nectar and is dry. Glancing back at my notes on the multi year old which is about $35 less in the UK showcase (I paid $60 here in Michigan) they appear to pile up decently uniformly. Nectar citrus and chocolate malt appear to be the Cardhu house profile. This 18 isnt terrible however why pay more for what likens to a somewhat darker and more profound adaptation of the 12? Not an extraordinary scotch however its got the multifaceted nature where it matters most and isn't excessively costly. For that I give it a 3.75. Good health

Because of a visually impaired tasting flight challenge sent to me by @Generously_Paul I had the option to test this 18yo malt from Cardhu. I dont have the run of the mill notes I like to take as I was more tuned in towards attempting to distinguish the contrasts between 5 unique whiskies and spirits. What I noticed about this one was the manner by which unforgiving it was for being matured for a significant long time. I recollect some extraordinary sherry notes and not a ton of warmth however Im slanted to believe that the nature of the containers utilized here was somewhat inadequate. All things considered Id give this a widely appealing score of 3 stars and Id be glad to return to it later on and get it through its appropriate paces in the event that I can land another pour some place not far off. Much obliged once more Paul. The test was an impact. Good wishes.
